There are not many designers who invest their time in creating a rocking chair. Most creators overlook it, labeling it is quirky and redundant. Hannes thinks exactly the opposite. “I’ve always been intrigued by rocking chairs." He says. “I used to have one here at home, near the fire place: a kid’s version where I hardly fitted in. I would sit in it a lot. I don’t know why, I guess the swinging movement of it reminds me of my childhood. Apart from that, I also enjoy balancing on two legs when sitting on a regular chair."
Thus, a rocking chair had to be made, which they did after they created their first seats in 2012. In that year Muller Van Severen was appointed a solo exhibition at Interieur Kortrijk called Future Primitives. “It was the first big show of our designs”, Fien remembers. “We had sixty square meters to fill but no furniture to sit on. We were urged to design some.”Under small pressure of the solo show, Fien and Hannes made their iconic seats with a leather cloth spanned between two horizontal bars.
After that, they designed the rocking chair which is constructed by the same principal. Just as with all Muller Van Severen’s designs, transparency is key. And so it swings through the space of the interior without ever covering the background.

Muller van Severen
Muller Van Severen was founded in the early Spring of 2011. With both Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen being artists, it’s natural that the collection sits somewhere between design and art. The couple has been on an inspired quest for sculpturally interesting furniture objects, always including the space around it, and characterized by a careful research into their shared passion for art, architecture and materials. At the same time Muller Van Severen’s designs appear to be created almost intuitively and with total effortlessness. It looks as if the designers draw with crayons in space.
Valerie Objects is an Antwerp-based design label initiated by Axel van den Bossche (CEO of Serax) and art director Veerle Wenes (owner of the Valerie Traan gallery, Antwerp), combining their professional and personal tastes for all things good and beautiful.
Although valerie_objects has outgrown its life as a side-project and has become a young but mature global design platform, the philosophy remains the same: presenting everyday tools and objects that have a unique appearance.
Valerie Objects understands the designer’s drive to develop a durable signature style, as well as the consumer’s desire to connect with a patiently selected object. the label stands for unique yet accessible creations, designed for daily use. many owners develop a special relationship with their chosen object; they get more attached to it as it becomes part of their personal story.
